DEFENSIVE
DRIVING SAFETY COURSE: This is a
one-on-one, hands-on, classroom and behind-the- wheel-driving instruction
that deals primarily the skills needed to drive defensively. We incorporate
videos and lecture in the training. We use dual control training vehicles
for the behind-the-wheel portion of the training. Although this type
of training is normally done for employees that have been involved in
accidents while driving a company car, it is a very good training class
for new employees that are going to be driving as part of their job duties.
What is Defensive driving?
Defensive driving is a way of driving that allows you to take into
consideration other peoples bad driving habits. Using defensive driving
techniques help you anticipate the way, as to safety avoid accidents.
“ The Smith System of Driving” The
Five Keys to Space Cushion Driving:
1. Aim High in Steering.
2. Get the Big Picture.
3. Keep Your Eyes Moving.
4. Leave Yourself an Out.
5. Make Sure They See You.
Four Characteristics of A Safe Driver:
1. Attitude
A. You must maintain a courteous, patient, and non-confrontational
attitude.
B. The driving skills you have are worth nothing without the right
attitude.
C. Keep your cool.
2. Observation
A. You must observe current traffic conditions.
B. You must observe road and weather condition.
C. You must observe all applicable traffic laws.
D. You cannot observe everything around you.
3. Concentration
A. You must have complete concentration on your driving, so you can
react immediately to any situation that might arise.
B. You cannot drive safely if mind is somewhere else.
4. Anticipation
A. Anticipate the actions of other drivers around you.
B. Always be in a “Defensive Position”.
C. Always leave yourself an out.
Tips for Sharing the Road with Trucks:
1. The “No Zone”- (Blind Spots: Left – Right – Back).
2. How to pass a truck.
3. Wide right turn.
4. Following distance- (4 seconds).
5. Merging onto a freeway.
6. Get in proper lane early to exit.
7. When you turn on windshield wipers, turn on lights.
8. When following a truck at night, keep lights on dim.
Auto Safety Check List:
1. Fluid levels – (oil and water). It is highly recommended to change you oil every 3,000 miles.
2. Check tires for bald spots and cracks in sidewalls.
Rotate your tires every time you change your oil.
3. Check wheels for cracks and loose or missing
4. Check to see if all lights are working.
5. Check windshield wipers – Make sure blades are in good condition.
6. Check exhausts system for leaks. Have it checked every time you change your oil.
7. Check your brakes- Have a licensed mechanic inspect them.

3. Keeping a Safe Space Around the Car.
4. Driving in Traffic.

1. Freeway Driving.
2. Night Driving
